The 2010 Braking the Cycle Ride presented by
Hensley Legal Group was a roaring success! About 140 riders showed up to support the cause, a fifty percent increase over last year.
Christel House staff and volunteers arrived before the sun was up to get the Academy parking lot ready for the riders' arrival. WJJK 104.5 Classic hits, our media sponsor, pumped everyone up as they piped out the classic rock hits. Bikes began rolling in around 8:45, and they were treated to breakfast including Christel House coffee, orange juice, donuts from Kroger, cinnamon rolls from the Ivy Tech Culinary Arts department, fruit from Piazza Produce, and bagels from Shapiro's Deli, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and Paradise Bakery.
Between breakfast and the call to bikes, the participants had the chance to mill around, and pick up additional goodies from our sponsor's booths or buy raffle tickets. Many got free quotes from Rider Insurance, and the Hensley Legal Group. WJJK, and 317 Ryders booths were popular stops.
Before the riders departed, Carey Dahnke, principal of Christel House Academy, welcomed everyone and briefly spoke about what sets Christel House apart. Mayor Greg Ballard thanked everyone for coming and for their support of the good work that the Academy is doing to improve Indianapolis education. A student from the 9th grade class also spoke about their project to give back and build a well in Tanzania. After a short safety briefing from the Indiana State Police, the riders mounted their bikes and drove off to a shout of "Let's Ride" from the Christel House kids.
The conditions were beautiful as the group headed south to Nashville, Indiana. Several riders remarked that they liked having the police escort provided by both the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and the Indiana State Police, so they could enjoy the ride without having to stop at all the intersections. The 317 Ryders posted
this video of the journey. Setting a relaxing pace, the group returned to Indianapolis about three hours later, where Dick's Bodacious Barbecue and All American Picnic had prepared a delicious lunch.
The final event of the day was the raffle of prizes from Offset House, Walt Disney World, Panera Bread, Flat Out Motorsports, Pit Bull Leather Company, the Indiana Pacers, Longacre Bar and Grill, Oberweis Dairy, McAlister's Deli, Dick's Sporting Goods, Jonathan Byrd's cafeteria, the Daily Grind Coffee House, Avocado Motorsports, and Roush Fenway Racing. The coveted price of a leather jacket and glove went to Christel House’s own Joe Schneider. The drawing wasn’t rigged, we promise!
The Back Home Again Foundation kept everyone hydrated throughout the day with their donation of water and Pepsi products. A special thanks to Archer's Meats for providing food for all of our volunteers, and to BlackInk IT, Sheil Sexton, Schmidt Associates, Bookkeeping Plus, and Tony Sacco's Coal Oven Pizza for making the day possible.
A great time was had by all, and plans are already in the works for next year's ride. September 17, 2011. Mark your calendars! You won't want to miss it!
