Kites lift spirits in Cape Town

In late October, the skies of Cape Town fill with colorful kites of all different shapes and sizes. This year, several of the soaring pieces of art were created by the students at Christel House South Africa. They, along with students from forty-two other schools, competed in the Boomerang Schools Edu-Kite Competition at the Cape Town International Kite Festival, which asked all of the children to decorate their kites with their understanding of “Uplifting Mind and Body,” the festival’s theme.

The Cape Town International Kite Festival attracts over 20,000 people to the city each year. Sponsored by Cape Mental Health, the festival strives to highlight the connection between mental and physical well-being. Inviting attendees to fly kites is the organization’s way of attempting to uplift spirits, symbolically and in reality. The opportunity was especially meaningful to the Christel House students who participated, since most of them had suffered some form of trauma during the year.

In addition to all the fun that was had at the festival, the students got an extra surprise. Their competition entry took second place! We are so proud of these Christel House South Africa students, and all of our students who overcome mental and physical trauma to succeed in so many ways.
