Science Olympiad at Christel House with Dell "Powering the Possible"

If Pollution and Global warming are real issues, the measures to curb it are equally real. Some of these suggestions came alive at the Science Olympiad held at Christel House India in October with Dell Powering all what is Possible. While the participants from grade 5 to 12 used enormous imagination and passion to come up with projects to curb pollution on this planet, volunteers from Dell participated equally and enthusiastically encouraging these young minds. The Dell volunteers encouraged children to give better explanation and innovative ideas were appreciated. They further probed the students on the measures taken by Christel House in its bit to curb global warming, sensitizing them to start from their home turf. The students worked on topics including global warming, acid rain, depletion of soil and the effects of pollution. 3-dimensional models were prepared with renewable resources, biodegradable material such as waste leaves, paper, and available lab equipment. Students worked on strong and compelling scripts prove their point on the cause and effect of melting glaciers and the pollutants like CFCs and its effects. This drew several queries and adulation from the participating employees of Dell at the event. “Evil robot” – the model on pollution, was the star of the day. It was created with waste products and paper, reusable plastic water bottles. Air, water and industrial pollution were highlighted and explained by the students in the group. The Science Olympiad winners were Golden Orioles with 177 Points. Followed by Purple Peacock with 165 points. The entire Olympiad was technologically programmed with power point presentation to support the quizzing and experiment rounds. The enthusiastic participation from Dell brought alive the innumerable possibilities to power the anti-global warming brigade of Christel House.

This boat will not rock! Christel House creativity impresses visiting volunteers from Dell India

Teaching individuals how to swim and tide over choppy waters is not just a metaphor used by Christel DeHaan when describing the grand mission of Christel House – it was creative reality displayed by the students of Christel House in Bangalore.

Last week, volunteers visiting the school from Dell, as part of the Dell Youth Connect grant, left the campus mesmerized. The occasion was the term presentation on a topic – this time Boats – using an interdisciplinary approach. From power point presentations to 3D models, from greeting cards to musical anthems, subjects like Physics, Maths, Computer Sciences, Art, Music and Languages came alive in a spectacular display put together by 5th to 9th graders.

In this day and age of communication, the ability to present one’s point of view effectively makes the winning difference. Christel House, with its out of box teaching initiatives, is surely sailing in the right direction.

Guest Blog: Dell YouthConnect visits Christel House India

By Carly Tatum (Dell YouthConnect)

I have never been so proud to work at Dell. On Monday, a few of us had the opportunity to visit one of the Dell Youth Connect partner organizations, Christel House India, located outside Bangalore. Christel House's vision is to help local underprivileged children break the cycle of poverty, realize their hopes and dreams, and become self-sufficient, contributing members of society.

We spent the day touring the facilities, meeting students, watching their amazing presentations and participating in the Dell YouthConnect Math Olympics! The students were extremely polite, confident and very motivated. I don’t think we saw a single child without a giant smile on their face.

After our time at Christel House, we visited one of the neighborhoods where the students live. The contrast between the nurturing, supportive Christel House and the neighborhoods where these students live was startling. These bright, energetic students live in homes the size of a Dell cube w/ 4-6 other people and no beds. They have very little access to water, no access to toilets and very little food. Thanks to Christel House, they have healthcare, regular meals, a very safe and nurturing environment and bright future. Many have hopes of working at Dell one day.

I think I can speak for both Sarah and Amy when I say this was one of the most inspiring yet emotional experiences I’ve ever had!

Christel House is proud to have Dell YouthConnect as a partner in our mission to break the cycle of poverty.  Many thanks go to Carly, Sarah, Amy and their co-workers who are helping to change the lives of children in India.  For more information visit Dell YouthConnect's Website.

Michael Dell speaks of Christel House

Michael Dell (CEO of Dell) visited India this week and spoke of Christel House when meeting with Prime Minister, Mr. Manmohan Singh.

Mr. Dell gifted "Life's Strokes", a Christel House student's painting, to the Prime Minister and briefed him on the good work that Christel House was doing in India and Dell's support of our efforts.

Meet the artist - Arun Kumar Hannumappa.

Arun has been at Christel House for the past 7 years. He finished 10th grade in 2009 and is now studying in his 1st year of the pre-university course at Christel House India. Arun’s father is a plumber by trade, but does not contribute much to the family income. He struggles with alcohol and employment. Arun’s mother does her best to keep the family together and works as domestic help in order to maintain their meager livelihood.

Arun's first love is abstract painting and he also enjoys cooking. He is also a member of the school soccer team and shares that the support and education he's received from Christel House has been a life changing experience for him. Arun wants to join the Indian Police Service after he completes his education. His priority is to look after his family and also work for the good of the community and his country.

Dell-India supports Christel House through the Dell Youth Connect program that provides comprehensive educational opportunities to students in grades 5, 6 and 7 with specific focus on technology integration and standards-based instruction in Math and Science. Dell-UK sponsored a well equipped physics laboratory at the school and Dell-South Africa recently transformed technology at Christel House South Africa.

Christel House and Dell are proud partners working to build a better future. To join us, visit www.christelhouse.org.

Dell transforms Christel House South Africa

Dell has a rich history of corporate responsibility but just recently launched the amazing Dell YouthConnect program. Christel House India participated in 2009 and today, Christel House South Africa received a transformational gift from Dell.

The program is "designed to provide support for the educational and digital inclusion initiatives essential to success". At Christel House South Africa, that means a full computer lab to enhance math, science, music and other instruction, a laptop for each teacher in their classroom, visual media projectors, printers, CAD Drawing pens for engineering drawing class and flash drives for students in Grade's 11 & 12.

Dell has taken learning and technology to the next level at Christel House South Africa. Their involvement will truly prepare our students to connect, learn, and grow with their peers.

Thanks Dell - you're making a world of difference, and it shows.

Kite Festival showcases students learning and talent

Almost six weeks of dedicated efforts from the students and staff of Christel House India, culminated with the Kite Festival on the 1st of August, 2009. We had 20 employees from Dell International Services who graced our kite festival and were welcomed by the grand and colorful rangoli made by the students and teachers. The Dell employees visited the classrooms and read through all the materials displayed on the walls, boards and corridors. They were in awe at the creative skills and talents of all the students. The students shared a vast amount of information about kites through Power Point Presentations, brochures, documents and the innumerable pictures of kites in various shapes, colours and sizes. The main idea was to integrate subjects into the theme. They concentrated on creative writing based on kites, diamantes poetry, reading, comprehension etc. They prepared models, charts that described the aerodynamics of kite flying.

The much awaited festival concluded with the kite flying competition. The inter house competition, had the best students of each house flying kites specially made by the team on the day before. There was no end to the excitement on the school ground as the students; teachers and Dell volunteers tried their hand at the art of flying kites. The fun and frolic overshadowed the competition to an extent. Four Dell volunteers were judges to determine the winners on various criteria. The Golden Orioles stole the show with their exquisite performance. The festival proved the heights to which the dedication and talent of the students can lift the morale of the school, exactly like the kites that reached the skies on the 1st of Aug, 2009
